Bat Houses

Have troubles with insect control in your backyard...bats love moths and will eat mosquitoes as well.  I suggest a smaller bat house if you live on a small lot in town, and if you live in the country, one larger house, like the Looker Single chamber or larger.  If you have a huge area, consider 2 small bat houses or one large bat house per acre.  The bat houses I carry are mainly made from cedar to last a long time.  They are quailty built bat houses and built to specifications to attract and house bats safely.  For the highest percentage of occupancy, place two bat houses back to back on a pole.  If you place the bat box in a tree in the summer, they probably won't find it until the following spring, when the leaves are gone.

Here is one way to effectively rid your attic of bats.

  • Do this in early spring, when the bats do not have young that can't fly, not only will the young starve, but leave a foul odor in your house when they do.
  • Watch the bats exit the house in the evening.  Find out where their exits are...there is probably more than one.
  • Once they exit, seal the entrance.
  • Place a bat box as close as you can to that sealed entrance.

Bats will eat their weight in moths, mosquitoes and other insects in one night, helpful little guys to have around.  From small and practical for your garden, to a large kit for a larger orchard or barnyard, we'll have the right one for you.

We have one in our small orchard, and another on the barn at Barn in the Sticks!

If you live in the northern US, you'll want to make sure your house is a dark color.  I'm in Wisconsin, and I painted my house black.  This will keep the bats warm in the evening and early morning.  In the mid-section of the US, a medium stain would do well, and in the south, no stain is needed, however cedar does tend to grey as it ages...to prevent this put on a coat of Cabot or a similar sealer to keep your cedar looking like cedar.
