Attracting Bluebirds

!

House sparrows and starlings have really cut back on the bluebird population in the United States.  If you are lucky, you can get a nesting pair to visit your yard.  Here are some tips!

Understand the Bluebirds for your area.

  • Generally, if you live from the Dakotas south to Texas and east, you have the Eastern Bluebird.  From In Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona, Nevada, trhough western Texas, you have the Western Bluebird.  And if you live in west of the Dakotas south to Texas, you could see the Mountain Bluebird.

Types of feeders

  • Bluebirds love insects, spiders, mealworms and berries.  A great treat for them is to save some berries from the fall harvest in your freezer, then put them out in the winter or spring for a treat for the bluebird.  Here is one of the bluebird feeders that I use from Looker Products, just follow this link.
  • To help stop other birds from eating the hummingbird food, try using a feeder with a hole in the side, like those offered at Barn in the Sticks.  The hole is sized correctly to let bluebirds and chickadee in but keep larger birds out.
  • Try other foods too, bluebirds also enjoy peanut butter, baked goods, peanuts and raisins.

What plants will help attract bluebirds?

  • Bluebirds love open space, hillsides, farmlands, orchards, open woodlands and pine forests.
  • Bluebirds also love bayberries, blueberries, dogwood berries, juniper berries, pine nuts, raisins, raspberries, and sumac berries.

Where do bluebirds nest?

  • Bluebirds have been pushed out of their natural habitat by starlings and wrens.  To help bring them back, try building or purchasing a birdhouse specific to the bluebirds for your area.
  • Use a house with a 1-1/2" entrance hole for Eastern Bluebirds and 1-9/16" entrance for mountain and western bluebirds.
