Ways to naturally reduce the mosquito population.
Here are some great ways to naturally reduce the mosquito population in your backyard.
Keeping mosqutoes out of my yard
There are many natural ways to help you naturally control your mosquito population without using sprays which may be harmful to your or your pets.

How do I remove mosquitoes from my yard safely and without chemicals?

Mosquitoes are one of the biggest kill-joys of summer, the destroyer of the perfect fishing trip, a campfire...I've been there!  A few may even carry the West Nile Virus.  Barn in the Sticks can help you with several ways to cut down your pest problem, without using harsh chemicals.

Protect yourself and your family without chemicals by installing bat houses.  While the old wives’ tale is that bats carry rabies, your chances are much better to get rabies from your family dog than from a bat.  Bats can eat their weight in insects, including mosquitoes in a single night.  They also feast on other insects at night to help your fruit and vegetable crops naturally!

Whether you decide to build your bat box or purchase one, you’ll want to mount it at least 15 feet in the air, on a tree, post, pole, or even your barn, shed or house…then be patient.  It can take up to a year for the bats to find your bat box, so don’t be disappointed if you don’t have immediate results.

We offer two brands of bat houses that have proven track records and all are manufactured in the United States.  They include Looker Products and Homestead.  Both are high quality products, the Looker bat boxes are made with cedar, and are built to the OBC (Organization for Bat Conservation) specifications.  The Homestead products bat boxes are more decorative bat boxes, which would look fantastic near your beautiful garden, or near your house.

Remember also that bats need a close water source; it could be a nearby stream, lake, river, or even a birdbath.  At the same time, keep in mind that stagnant, standing water is also a recipe for mosquito larvae….so if you have water in the area, try to keep it moving, with a fountain, pump, or change it often…also using a larva killer in your standing water will work.  The one we carry at Barn in the Sticks is basically concentrated garlic.  It will kill the larvae in the water and it also helps repell mosquitoes in your yard.  It does not contain anything which would harm you, the environment, your pets, fish or your feathered friends.
