The Slot Style Bluebird bird house works very well for Eastern Bluebirds and discourages sparrows. Sparrows generally will not nest in it, they don't like the slot-style opening, whereas the bluebird will use it. This bluebird house is constructed of Western Red Cedar and has the proper ventilation and drainage holes for the bluebird. It is also approved by NABS, the North American Bluebird Society.
Bluebird houses should be placed in open spaces, like a fence line in a field or in a very open backyard. Putting them next to bushes increases the chances of house sparrows using your bluebird nesting box. If you clean your bluebird house after each brood, bluebirds will re-nest and produce up to four broods in a single year! Cleaning out the old nest helps against predators by keeping the fledglings low in the nesting box. Bluebird bird houses should be placed about 5 feet high, and using predator guards is highly recommended. You can make your own predator guards using large tubing or stove pipe.
